I took a lengthy break from blogging and even sewing just to spend time adjusting to all that is ocurring in our lives/family, and I'm pleased to say that we are most excited about all the upcoming changes. I hope you'll bear with me as I play around with the look, purpose, and plans for my Yay Home blog....

Thank you!

Yay Homehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12628995048118157359noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1331377558176575730.post-37419819391316353172011-11-12T08:21:00.001-05:002011-11-15T10:15:26.844-05:00Delightful Autumn Treats

Years ago I taught with someone who made the BEST pumpkin rolls I'd ever tasted. Okay, it was actually the first time I'd EVER tasted a pumpkin roll, but it was fabulous. My coworker gave out samples of the yumminess and then took orders from everyone. The rolls were all wrapped up and delivered to us so we could take them to a Thanksgiving dinner or just go home and devour them ourselves. (Of course I never did that ;-) I thought the whole thing was a delicious idea all the way around....a good money-maker AND a treat for those of us who didn't cook much at the time.

Since then I've made a few pumpkin rolls of my own during the holidays and still love them. If you get a chance or are looking for something a little different to make for a dinner or gathering, try one of the recipes below. It's just a nice change of pace when you need to take something for a holiday meal or get-together. You could even make up several and freeze them! Sweet!
Another treat that I've really been enjoying is the Starbucks Caramel Apple Spice! Come to think of it, it would be rather yummy if enjoyed along with a slice of pumpkin roll...talk about the epitome of autumn deliciousness!
In August, my sister-in-law decided to give birth to her sweet and precious bundle of joy, Luke, waaaay before he was supposed to arrive (3 wks.) We had her shower all planned out, so we went forth with it and considered it quite a unique twist that Baby Luke could ATTEND his own shower! Not everyone can say that, ya know?

Here are some of the fun decorations. We recreated these invitations...
About five years ago we went to visit friends in Charleston, SC. I suppose you could say that's when and where the Hubster fell in love with shrimp and grits. In fact, I think he ate that for every meal during our visit. Since that trip he has spent much time trying different recipes to recreate the deliciousness.

It was nothing short of fate when our neighbors told us about a shrimp and grits festival that wasn't too far away. I believe we made our reservations the night they told us. So this weekend, we'll be spending a lovely bit of time on Jekyll Island.

Now, I'd like to tell you that I love shrimp and grits as much as the Hubster does, but I'm afraid I'm kind of lukewarm about them. Nevertheless, I'm beyond thrilled that the festival also has an arts and crafts show as well as a kid's area with things Sweetbaby will thoroughly enjoy. Not to mention the sheer joy of just enjoying Jekyll Island with all its bike trails and natural beauty....A wonderful family getaway with something for everyone! Yay!

If heading to the festival isn’t an option, try this succulent Shrimp and Grits recipe, courtesy of Chef Abigail Hutchinson of The Jekyll Island Club Hotel.

Also, I hope you'll visit Yay Home next week for another giveaway, a furniture makeover, a Dr. Seuss baby shower, some simple sewing projects, and MORE! Have a great weekend!

Shrimp and Grits

Serves 4 to 6

Ingredients: Garlic butter (recipe below)
1 bundle green onions, diced (green and white parts)
1/2 pound Andouille sausage or any other spicy sausage you like
1 pound fresh Georgia White shrimp peeled and deveined
White wine to taste
Juice from one half of a lemon
1 cup heavy whipping cream
Old Bay seasoning to taste
Salt and pepper to taste
All-purpose flour as needed
3 to 4 cups hot, cooked cornmeal (grits)
Shredded medium sharp cheddar cheese to taste

Directions: 1. In a large saute pan over medium heat, melt 4 to 5 tablespoons of garlic butter. Add sausage and onions and cook, stirring often, until sausage is browned and onions are soft.
2. Add shrimp, cream, wine and lemon juice, stirring to combine, and cook for 3 minutes. Season with Old Bay, salt and pepper to taste.
3. Let simmer for a few minutes then sprinkle flour on top and stir in. Continue doing this until it reaches a thickened consistency. Let it simmer a little while longer to cook out the flour taste.
4. Right as grits are done, stir in cheddar cheese. Divide cheese grits into 4 to 6 serving bowls and top with shrimp mixture. Serve immediately.

Garlic butter: To make garlic butter, soften 1 pound unsalted butter, 6 ounces bacon fat, 2 tablespoons minced garlic, 1 tablespoon paprika, 1/2 teaspoon each of chopped thyme, parsley, and oregano. Mix all ingredients together. This amount of garlic butter is good for two to three batches of Shrimp and Grits.
Note: Grits is nothing more than cooked cornmeal (Italians call it polenta). Use chicken stock or fish stock in place of water to add more flavor.

I got this invitation today and wanted to share it with you. I love receiving the Proverbs 31 daily devotional emails, so I'm sure this will be just as lovely. A while back I subscribed to a little series of emails made up of excerpts from this book, and I thoroughly enjoyed them. I know I am my own worst critic and this book takes those kinds of thoughts and puts them into a spiritual perspective.

I love that saying, and today it actually IS my birthday!!! Woo Hoo!!! I opted for a very relaxing day filled with a spa pedicure, a delightful book, a nap, hubster home early from work, lots and lots of hugs and kisses from Sweetbaby, and family over for supper. Oh, and lets not forget all the cake!!!!! Delicious.

This was one of those birthdays that I'd like to relive daily for a long time even though I'm getting older. I simply can't let that get me down because life is just too beautifully sweet to worry about wrinkles and such.

Yay Birthday!

I don't know about you, but I sure do love spending time gathering ideas and inspiration from Pinterest. A couple of months ago I saw a picture of a shirt that was made to look like notebook paper. The teacher in me thought that was a nifty and clever idea to try to recreate for my little guy's first day of 2K...perfect! Here's the one I saw on Pinterest. I believe the price tag on this one is around $50!

I just happened to have a white shirt that I'd not appliqued for him yet, so I got that out along with a ruler and disappearing ink pen and went to work. I drew one line down the side of the shirt to create the "margin." I then drew horizontal lines one inch apart all the way down the shirt. I already had both red and blue thread, so it was just a matter of picking a stitch on my sewing machine that was a little thicker than a standard stitch, and I was on it! Nothing to this project except sewing some straight lines (and making sure your disappearing ink actually disappears ;-)

Here's Sweetbaby's shirt! Too cute and only cost a few dollars because I already had everything I needed!

Okay, so I did jazz it up just a bit more and added his name to the top line. Here he is rocking his notebook paper shirt on the first day of 2K....
I want to wrap up this (overly extended) little series on things related to cooking by chatting for a bit about a really helpful site and by launching Yay Home’s second giveaway.

I participate in a couple of groups consisting of some very helpful and generous ladies. When a person has a baby, an illness, surgery, or just any type of big life event going on, these ladies provide meals for the family in need for about two weeks! What a blessing that is!

However, the coordination/management end of things, as you might imagine, could get a little messy when there are dietary restrictions, food allergies, and specific preferences to consider. This is just one very positive benefit of using Food Tidings, a website that helps with the management aspects of providing meals to families for a set period of time.
Whoa! Has it been more than a month since my last post??? Time has flown by, and I apologize for the silence. When life gets super busy though, sometimes you have to take a break from the computer.

In the last couple of months we've dealt with our Sweetbaby climbing out of his crib and switching him to a toddler bed. He also started 2K which is some serious big-boy stuff. In addition to this I've been doing a ton of sewing. I taught my first ever class in my home. It was called, "Just Sew," and we made reversible half aprons. I've also been doing some "freelance" sewing for a local children's clothing business. We've had family birthdays, family baby showers, the premature arrival of my adorable nephew, OH, and a total bedroom makeover. Whew...I'm tired from just listing it all. It has been busy, but this is the good stuff you know??..The stuff that makes life fun.

I'd found several things I wanted to share, but since I'm ready to get back on my blogging track, I'll just shorten the list of topics a bit and then round it out with a giveaway.

I've been reading the book Made to Crave, by Lysa TerKeurst, and have really been able to relate to the various topics she discusses. I realize this doesn't make for the most interesting topic, but you have to keep in mind that these are the types of little touches I never paid much attention to back during my working days that I now notice.

The dish towels I came across ALSO gave me some good uses for some of that scrap fabric I keep accumulating as well as giving a second life to some flour sack towels I was given to use as burp cloths.

Here's another little hint as to why I'm bothering to blog about dish towels....Soon, one of my sweet followers will have a chance to win a stay-put dish towel along with a couple of other cute kitchen items as part of Yay Home's next giveaway. What is a stay-put dish towel? I'm so glad you asked...
Samuel has tried to yank it down a time or two to no avail. That's why it caught my eye when I saw it on Pinterest.

Here's the picture I stumbled across that will provide a link to the tutorial I followed. It's just a simple kitchen towel with some strips of fabric and ribbon sewn on. Easy as can be!

<img 371?="" border="0" height="267" src="http://d30opm7hsgivgh.cloudfront.net/upload/45183301_oq1HdJUi_c.jpg" width="400" />

Source: pin-sew-press.blogspot.com via Yay on Pinterest

The next one is another type of towel that just looks so "summery" to me. I wish I could remember exactly where I saw this one because it was before my Pinterest days. It is even easier to make! I used a flour sack towel someone had given me to use as a burp cloth. It was stain-free and tucked away with the baby stuff. I also used more of the strips of fabric I used for the stay-put towel. Fabric scraps would also be great.

Anyway, I just sewed two strips down both sides of the towel. I left the ends unfinished so they would fray and give a homey-worn look. Isn't it lovely? (as far as dish towels are concerned ;-)

<img border="0" height="640" m$="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMzvLMkqGy_fuB9ZSmPee-lrLsFWi6urSiXeovy9QvSmOkjUrwV9_jVdxOSJQbF5ubv_dDzkiDOaTyaYh44BwFQ4n16xSRn3Q_ecBvtWl51UFsAB3f70My8fXr5RdRrcUVWDolDBQ2SpnR/s640/dish3.JPG" width="480" />

These fabric strips were part of a roll of strips I bought at JoAnn's. Love all these colors together!

<img border="0" height="300" m$="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-lL2l0o_VmZ-TpliWCDB8cFDSdD8UDN8vqzrxlxTYyVwdIhm19MpjMHWowCUrVBE9kXpq5TBD01VGL6TYMdJobUhYw2o2RAqT-F9N8M_xiZBe6hN2TeZeEwCbxJjStMdU4SRop8zBFwZ1/s400/fab1.JPG" width="400" />

Now that you're all inspired to <strike>CLEAN</strike> I mean make more dish towels. ;-) HERE are several more examples you could try. (I can't wait to try the bunting towel, the ribbon towel, and the design transfer towels. Any of these would not only add a nice personal touch to your kitchen, but they also make lovely gifts.

In a few days I will show you how I'm using this as part of a gift for Samuel's teachers this summer. (That will also kick off the giveaway!)
I am a part of our local MOMS club though, and a relatively new member brought this idea with her when she joined our chapter. It is now one of my favorite events, so I agreed to host this month. Here's how it works...

The person hosting provides the dough, sauce, tin foil/saran wrap, and a big table. Everyone who attends brings their own pizza pan, cheese for their pizza, and one topping. An evite is sent out and when people reply they list what topping they'll be bringing. We have it around 4:00, and kids are welcome to come and play, make their own pizza etc.

Once you've assembled your pizza, you take it home and bake it for supper! It's a great way to get to visit with friends while your kids play AND you get a yummy supper out of the deal. Here are some pictures from this month's pizza club!

I ordered the balls of dough from a local pizza shop. They were about $1.50 each for a medium sized pizza crust.

<img border="0" height="300" m$="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUruT2-npfJKyOYGI7QCkSs5ziG-WBlJo-jBrR7_YmzvVZEb0pnLBjZvRcXL1T9FOpr104YRInzgQYJW5tAbOCzbCnKpeDQCtYnDFC65eEckEpgc5HK4N1QmP5XRWyr3RkQENVv-tN8d70/s400/pizza1.JPG" width="400" />

I bought spaghetti sauce at Kroger and added some Italian Seasoning. You could also get fancy and make some from scratch using a recipe like {THIS}. I put it all in a big pot with a ladle for everyone to use and then placed it in the center of the table.

Here's a shot of the table once people had been working for a while...

We bake them at about 350 degrees for 20-30 minutes. We never have any leftovers because they are so delicious! She did one side for herself and one side for her hubby.

The kiddos were busy in the playroom, but you can also set up a little table for the kids to make their own pizzas. Might want to have your Dustbuster handy if you choose to do that! =)

Variations

If you'd like to change it up a bit, consider GRILLING it like TidyMom did {HERE} or use BBQ sauce instead of pizza sauce and go for something like a BBQ chicken pizza following a recipe like {THIS} very amazing one from Pioneer Woman (she even makes her own dough!)

I hope you'll consider trying a pizza club with a group of friends or family! Let me know if you have any questions about it

We have some wonderful new neighbors, so we wanted to have them over for dinner along with another couple who has been in this neighborhood for 40ish years.

If there is anything at all going on around here, its the HEAT!! I really try to cook in ways that will keep our house from being quite so hot (crock pot, grill etc.) When we were planning what to cook, I decided to combine some good old recipes with some fresh new ones to create a very appetizing (and filling) summer meal. Since we were trying new things, we made sure to have a plan B....burgers, buns, and some easy mac for the kiddos! ;-)

Fortunately, we didn't need our plan B. What's that you ask???? Only the best and freshest tasting guacamole dip I've ever had!! Let me put it like this. I didn't even LIKE guac until this recipe. I've heard other say the same. I call it Mollie-Guac because my dear friend, Mollie, introduced me to it and graciously shared her recipe. Here ya go...Take to to your next cookout. It'll be a HIT! (This pic isn't Mollie's, but I just liked the way it looks. Quite frankly, hers never lasts long enough to get a pic!)
juice 1 to 2 limes (to taste and depending on lime size)
1/2 tsp garlic salt
1 or 2 minced garlic cloves (best via garlic press)
1/2 to 3/4's of an onion, small diced (don't recommend vidalias;
keep adding and tasting until the consistency/amount of onion works for you--you can always add more, but taking it back OUT's not so easy:)
handful of cilantro if you've got it around, but I don't typically buy it special...
a couple squirts of hot sauce

chips of choiceMash your avocados, then add juice of one lime, salts, garlic, hot sauce, cilantro, and 1/2 onion (minced).

The inspiration for the rest of menu began here....with the Fire Wire. Have you seen this thing? You string up your kabobs like so.....

Let it marinade...yep, on the wire. Just put the whole thing into the marinade you choose. We used a bunch of Tastefully Simple spices and some Italian dressing.

Now, just lay the whole kabob on the grill, and grill it like you normally would! YUM!
It was actually so many months ago that Ihad to write myself a note, so I'd remember that I even had it! As July approached I dug it out of the craft closet and got to work.

<img border="0" height="480" i$="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEissETni15cYGi8EmHteJBMpmQC8FO9mNEDYz6nbFNX3dane01WPJC1RXyq4ZxJsZm63ERRPFs5XGSMIu0ZXHkJfgOnBmd0kkVUFE1zMRC7j7iv5GaNiIgrhdj-Xlg6vHo4sg-DIugGLZhl/s640/DSC04137.JPG" width="640" />

I had to buy a few birthday cards at Rite Aid the other day. While I was on that aisle I noticed these gift bow thingys and thought they kind of looked like fireworks. Hmmm...wheels started to turn....

<img border="0" height="480" i$="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtUssc0WaFgF-vR0XjPz-l1WoeJBk7Qhdp32Q72MpfVnJQfm4sJvLGcg2ZzMvbz7m8ayz2zCJRmE0q2D9iZH6uRf-CqYCjNpvtG6l7avpWnD2JQU_mxmElWedUPfu9h_LNEk5QTCbNfCYu/s640/DSC04138.JPG" width="640" />

I folded down one end of the placemat about an inch or two (just enough for it to fit onto my little garden flag holder) and sewed it straight across.

I love the look of pennant flags that are so popular now, so I decided to use some fabric scraps and bias tape I already had to create some little mini-pennant flags on my flag. I cut the scraps into triangle shapes and pinned them in place.

Using navy blue bias tape, I pinned it on top of the pennant flag edges and then zig-zag stitched the whole thing onto my placemat garden flag, removing pins as I sewed.

I wanted to put the word, "Celebrate," on the flag somewhere and will typically just use regular adhesive vinyl. It doesn't do as well on fabric as I'd like for it to when it's out in the weather, so I chose to use heat-transfer vinyl. I ordered a sheet of red a long time ago and haven't used it yet, so I dug it out too. I've had it so long that I had to go back and watch the video tutorial provided by expressionsvinyl.com to remember how to use it!
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">Usually this is what happens...poor muscadine vine :-(
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">Sooo, I adopted this method of decorating with flowers....yep, fake ones. No green thumb needed. However.....
